Gold leaf is simply put, gold that has been beaten into extremely thin sheets. These thin sheets of gold are usually used for decorations of ornaments and building parts, there is also edible gold leaf which can be used to garnish your food. Gold leaf is often thinner than paper and when held to the light it becomes semi-transparent.
On occasions gold leaf can be confused with metal leaf, however both products are different. Metal leaf come in any colour and do not contain any real “gold”. Gold leaf comes in 24 ct which is pure gold, yellow gold leaf is about 92% pure gold and white gold is around 50% pure gold.
Layering gold leaf over a surface is referred to as gold leafing or gilding. Traditional water gilding is the most difficult form of gold leafing. Gold leafing / gilding has been done by hand for hundreds of years.
Gold leaf has predominately been most popular and most common in its use as a gilding material for decorations such as status or picture frames. Golf leaf has been used in very old statues and art pieces which are still evident today. Such as Thai statues and Buddhist statues, are commonly covered in gold leaf.
